If you’re a therapist feeling stuck and not able to reach your potential, I want you to lean into these questions.
Who benefits from you playing small?
Who benefits from you staying in your comfort zone as a therapist?
Who benefits from you not pushing the boundaries of where you are at?
Who benefits from you not believing in your potential?
If you think your clients need you to do this, you are wrong.
I can’t think of any better modeling opportunity for clients than for therapists to stop playing small.
To step into who you can be and keep reaching for what you want even though it is uncomfortable is a fabulous and empowering example for clients.
If you are playing small to manage your own anxiety, you are benefiting short term from not feeling uncomfortable. But long term, it’s a problem because you’ll get stale, bored and more anxious and uncertain.
If you are playing small to avoid criticism from your professional peers, I get it. You are benefiting from feeling safe in staying the same. But long term, you are being held back by this don’t stick my neck by staying the same mentality. (can I just say many more of your professional peers will be cheering you on if you allow yourself to look for that.)
If you are doing it for others in your world, then you (and possibly the people in your world) are benefiting from keeping everything just as it is and potentially avoiding conflict. But again, long term it will come back as resentment and other unhelpful things in those relationships.

Plus, in my experience, sometimes the people around us don’t want us to play small at all. What is happening is we are just playing small as it was the pattern we learned to stay safe or make our family comfortable as a child.
No one benefits in the long term from therapists playing small, including you.
